Eurostar was hit by massive disruption at the end of 2009

Channel tunnel train operator Eurostar has announced a rise in revenues for the first three months of the year, following a disastrous end to 2009.

Ticket sales for the quarter hit £178m, up 5% on the same period last year.

The figures are a boost for Eurostar, which was criticised following a series of train breakdowns before Christmas.

A study into the breakdowns, which left 2,500 passengers stranded in the channel tunnel, found the firm's evacuation plans were insufficient.

Passenger numbers for January to March this year totalled two million, Eurostar said, with a 22% rise in customers from outside Europe.

However, the number of business customers using the service remained little-changed.
