Trio of operators launch France-Russia intermodal service

Wednesday, 24 March 2010

GEFCO, Fret SNCF, and TransContainer, the intermodal subsidiary of Russian Railways, will this week unveil plans to launch a rail freight service between France and Russia.

Described as “one of the greatest multimodal transport projects in Europe,” it will link Vesoul, in eastern France and Kaluga, in western Russia.

Kaluga is a fast-developing car manufacturing centre, with logistics group Gefco’s parent company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, building an assembly plant there. Volkswagen, Volvo and Renault are also present in the city.

The project will be given its official launch in Paris on Wednesday by Gefco CEO Yves Fargues, Sylvie Charles, the recently-appointed director of Fret SNCF, and Peter Baskakov, general director of TransContainer.
