Sweden announces formation of a new governmental multimodal transport authority

The Swedish government has announced that April 1, 2010 will mark the start of a new governmental authority – The Swedish Transport Administration. The new administration will work closely with the regions and municipalities and is charged with the task of planning and developing an effective and sustainable system including all modes of transport. It will also be responsible for building and maintaining the national highways, roads, and railways. In addition, it will be responsible for efficient use of the infrastructure and for promoting safe and environmentally adapted transport.

The new authority will include activities and operations that are currently undertaken by the Swedish Road Administration and the Swedish Rail Administration, as well as certain activities of the Maritime Administration, the Transport Agency, and the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communications Analysis. The main offices of the new Swedish Transport Administration will be located in Borlänge and it will have a regional organization that will be adapted to the planning processes and dialogue needs of the regions. With the start of the new department, the Road Administration, the Rail Administration, and the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communications Analysis will be phased out.

Working together with other authorities, enterprises and organizations, one of the final acts of the current Swedish Road Administration has been the drawing up of a multimodal transport strategy and action plan for the use of ITS in the transport system. The proposals for action have been collected under six focus areas, and there are targets and strategies for each of these. There are a total 40 measures that are briefly described in the plan, which also notes the organisations that will be responsible for them and the implementation times are identified.
