Ther BBC reports that a former Railtrack training centre in South Lanarkshire has been destroyed by a fire overnight.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in the single storey building in Quay Street, Rutherglen, at about 2130 GMT.

Flames had engulfed the block and support appliances were drafted in to help get it under control.

At the height of the blaze 40 firefighters were at the scene. No-one was injured and an investigation into the cause has been launched.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the crews were hampered by poor water supplies but were able to contain the fire to the unoccupied building and prevent it spreading to the many adjacent industrial units.
