Sweden’s state-owned rail freight operator Green Cargo is to trial stop-start technology on its fleet of modernised T44 locomotives.

Bombardier is to deliver the pilot programme, equipping 62 locomotives with a stop-start system.

The technology, which used widely in the automotive industry, will cut the locomotive’s engine while idle.

In 2007, MTU was awarded a contract to fit its Series 4000 engines into all of Green Cargo’s T44 locomotives. This programme was completed in 2011 and the locomotives were reclassified Td.

The new engines are designed to reduce fuel consumption by 20 per cent, and the introduction of stop-start technology will reduce the fleet’s emissions further.
