Network Rail has installed a set of five new cameras at rail crossings in Queen Adelaide.

The national railways authority says that the cameras will help clamp down on motorists who attempt to weave around the barriers when the warning lights are flashing.

The cameras are expected to ‘go live’ in the autumn but Network Rail has stressed that any fines doled out as a result of the new cameras will go straight into Government coffers and not to them.

A spokesman said: “In comparison to most other countries we have a good safety record at level crossings, but misuse persists, despite our best efforts.

“Some people are still putting their lives on the line by ignoring warning lights and sirens and trying to dash through crossings when trains are approaching.

“These cameras will act as a visible deterrent to that kind of behaviour and hopefully encourage everyone to use level crossings safely.”
