Many of those waiting at Bedford railway station ended up missing their train with one commuter describing the scene as 'a complete disaster'.

A notice board informed members of the public that the ticket office was closed for refurbishment and daily tickets could only be purchased from the machines, despite one of the machines reportedly being out of service,

A First Capital Connect spokesman said: “The station ticket office is temporarily closed for essential refurbishment and has been advertised to passengers and local media over the past three weeks.

“There was a surge in passenger numbers at the beginning of the off-peak travel time this morning and we had extra staff present to assist in the purchasing of tickets as promised with the closure.

“When the work is complete, the new ticket office will include an audio induction loop to help passengers with a hearing impairment as well as an improved intercom system.”
