AN artist’s impression of how a railway station planned for Ilkeston could look has been released to the Derby Telegraph.

Last week, we revealed Derbyshire County Council had submitted a bid for £4.58 million to the New Stations Fund to help fund the £6.33 million project.
 .
The council has earmarked £754,000 for the station, while the Nottingham Housing Market Area has vowed to provide £1 million. Erewash Borough Council will contribute £100,000.

If the £4.58 million bid is successful, the station could be up and running next year.
 .
The earmarked site is off Coronation Road, on the existing Erewash Valley railway line, close to the site of the former Ilkeston junction station with links to Millership Way.

The Government launched the New Stations Fund specifically to open new railway stations in England and Wales.

Councillor Chris Corbett, leader of Erewash Borough Council, said: “This reflects how important it is to us.

“We all want it. We are quite optimistic that it will happen because we have had support in Parliament as well as from the county council. It would be a wonderful thing if it happened.

“We are the largest town in England that has a railway line but nobody gets off. We are hoping that we are successful. We are confident as much as we can be.”
