An LGV driver has received a suspended prison term after his negligent actions led to a train crash at a level crossing.

Oswald Davies of Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire, admitted a charge of endangering passengers' lives after the trailer of hay he was pulling was hit by a Milford Haven to Manchester train at the Henllan Amgoed crossing in Whitland, Carmarthenshire on 19 December 2011.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Davies failed to obey signs telling drivers to stop before the crossing and phone to check it was safe to cross.

The ensuing collision resulted in 24 passengers suffering minor injuries and £250,000 in damages to the train and the cost of diverting services.

Judge Keith Thomas sentenced Davies to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and 300 hours of community work.
