Plans for a new rail maintenance building in Derby have been submitted to the city council, with the promise of 50 new jobs.

Network Rail originally submitted plans in February but withdrew them after the Midland Mainline electrification was confirmed, as more space was needed.

As well as 400 maintenance staff based at the site, an extra 50 will support the electrification project.

It is hoped work on the project will be complete by December next year

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "This maintenance depot is central to our plans to help sustain a modern, reliable railway in the East Midlands.

"The new depot will bring our frontline teams into a single location...and will also allow a more focused, rapid and flexible response to incidents."

The depot will consist of a three-storey building housing offices and welfare and storage facilities.

The new plans have increased the floor space and the height of the floor level
