Rail Workers in Spain Strike Against Public Sell Off

Rail workers in Spain go on strike causing traffic jams in Madrid and Barcelona

Hundreds of rail services operating in and out of the Madrid and Barcelona have been cancelled due to the strike.

Services were also seriously disrupted on the rush-hour subway services in both cities.

The strikes caused severe traffic jams in both cities.

Workers are angry at plans to restructure the rail network in preparation for privatisation of half of the rail network.

This is part of the austerity measures and aims to help slash the public deficit .

“The main problem is the privatisation of the rail services. This is going to lead to a deterioration in services as well as job losses,” said rail employee Miguel Angel Escolano Sanchez.

It is estimated that 100,000 railway workers could lose their jobs. Spain already has one in four people unemployed..
