The incident happened near Ballymoney railway station A train was forced to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting children who were "playing on the railway line" in County Antrim, Translink has confirmed.

The company said the driver of the Belfast to Portrush service saw three children on the track near Ballymoney at about 19:25 BST on Sunday.

The driver took the children onto the train and called police who met them at Ballymoney train station.

Translink said the children were all under 15.

In a statement, the company reminded the public of the dangers of trespassing on rail tracks.

Translink also urged parents to remind children and young people to stay off the tracks this summer.

"Our new train fleet is much quieter and faster than our older models and a moment's carelessness could lead to dire consequences," it said.

"Our summer rail safety campaign is based on the deadline theme and highlights the dangers of crossing the line, whether on the platform or close to tracks."

In addition, Translink said it was offering a reward of up to £1000 to anyone who witnessed an incident of trespass, vandalism or assault against a member of staff and was prepared to give evidence in court, leading to a conviction.
