Amtrak trains speed up in Midwest; $7B plan to be unveiled in D.C.
Amtrak trains in the Midwest are the first outside of the Northeast Corridor to move at triple-digit speeds. By 2016, they'll move at up to 110 mph over much of the Chicago-Detroit and Chicago-St. Louis routes. "A few years from now, people will be looking at the Midwest as they look at the Northeast corridor," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Meanwhile, Amtrak is scheduled to unveil a $7 billion development plan for Union Station in Washington, D.C., today. The Wall Street Journal (7/24), The Washington Post (7/24)
