During the last two years in 2010-11 and 2011-12, the South Central Railway has eliminated 357 unmanned level crossings and taken up massive campaign to check accidents at unammaned level crossings.

The International Union of Railways every year observed June 7 as the International Level Cross-ing Awareness Day. The Indian Railways is participating in this global campaign to sensitise road users to enhance safety at the level crossings. The International Level Cross-ing Awareness Day focuses on educational measures and promotion of road safety practices around level crossings.

At present, there are 2,236 level crossings in South Central Railway limits while 879 of them are unmanned level crossings. A total of 341 manned level crossings and 172 unmanned level crossings are there in Vijayawada division.

Accidents occur at the unmanned level crossing primarily due to inadequate precautions taken by road users like failing to observe the mandatory sign boards and basic traffic safety rules as per the Motor Vehicles Act.

The South Central Rail-way, Vijayawada division launches a seven day long special safety drive targeting safety at unmanned level crossing from June 7 to 13 with a view to eradicate accidents at unma-nned level crossings.
