Heathrow Express unveils new train carriages
Posted Monday, 28 May, 2012 - 11:21 by Rob GillHeathrow Express is targeting the corporate market with the launch of its refurbished trains.

The train operator, which runs services from the airport to Paddington in central London, has redesigned its first-class and standard cabins following research on what business travellers need.

The operator, which is part of Heathrow owner BAA, said it wanted to create a “lounge-like” environment in its new first-class carriages. Business travellers account for 65 per cent of its clients.

Changes in first class include quilted seat covers, the removal of overhead luggage racks, larger HD TV screens giving travel information as well as tables with two integrated power sockets.

Express class cabins will feature new seat configurations and better access to seats with smaller tables and improved at-seat power connections.

Heathrow Express has also improved its mobile phone signal to allow coverage for the entire journey including tunnels and stations as part of the £16 million investment in the brand which also includes new uniforms for staff and rebranded ticket offices.

All trains are to be completely refitted both inside and outside with the first refurbished carriages going into service today. The process will be rolled out over the next year and is scheduled to be completed by April 2013.

Dan Smith, head of engineering at Heathrow Express, said: “Heathrow Express was built with airline

customers and business travellers in mind.

“This recent wave of investment means the fleet is years ahead in terms of safety compliancy and continues to lead the way in terms of on board innovation and technology as well as improving the style and comfort that our passengers deserve.”

Heathrow Express managing director Keith Greenfield added: “Our new fleet will ensure that our customers receive the most relaxing and convenient travel experience possible. I am very proud to unveil our new trains – the result of three years hard work.”
