AN airport luggage trolley thrown onto railway tracks from a footbridge was struck by a train heading into Horley station on Wednesday morning.

The incident - caused by what Network Rail described as "an incredibly dangerous and foolish act" - happened at around 4.30am.

The trolley was launched from a bridge 550m along the line from Gatwick Airport railway station.

It was hit by the 3.59am Three Bridges to London Victoria service.

A spokesman for Southern Railway said: "There was no damage to the train, and there were no injuries, but there were delays while the train and tracks were inspected.

"The all-clear was finally given at around 5.10am but delays had started to build by then. Residual delays were experienced for the next hour or so."
