Two sex attacks in Newport station underpass

DETECTIVES launched a manhunt yesterday after two women were attacked in separate incidents in a subway under Newport Railway Station. Police were called to the subway yesterday after reports a man had attempted to sexually assault a woman at around 5.30am.

A British Transport Police spokesman said investigations revealed a second woman was attacked and sexually assaulted in the subway.

He said: “We are still in the process of speaking to the victims and will have more details in due course.

“Clearly, the investigation is still at an early stage and, at present, we are gathering as much evidence as possible in a bid to determine exactly what has happened and who is responsible.”

Officers are looking for a man, around 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in tall, of slim build, with dark, spiky hair.

He was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms and a blue top with white stripes down the arms and is believed to have had a northern English accent.

The spokesman added: “Incidents of this nature are extremely rare and the public can be assured that BTP and Gwent Police will do everything possible to trace the offender and bring him to justice.”

The subway, which runs from the junction of Devon Place and Pentonville under the station to the front of the old station, was cordoned off for several hours yesterday while scenes of crime officers examined the scene.

British Transport Police, who are leading the investigation, were unable to give further details of the time of the first attack, or of the ages of the alleged victims, as the Argus went to press last night.

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040, Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
