Heatwave expected to lead to surge in rail passengers over the weekend

Train companies are gearing up for an increase in passengers of up to 25% in some parts of the country, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to make the most of the late autumn heatwave to visit the country’s seaside resorts and beauty spots.

Edward Welsh from the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “We’re expecting thousands of families to pack their the buckets and spades, suncream and beach towels, and catch the train to seaside resorts and beauty spots. For those planning to make the most of the great weather, there will be plenty of cheap deals, and people can get a third off the cost of their journey with a Railcard. Catching the train beats getting hot and bothered behind the wheel of a car.”

Research from ATOC shows that during previous hot weather this year there was an average increase in journeys of 27% to many seaside resorts and tourist destinations, such as Brighton, Skegness and Bournemouth.
