Train Company prepares to give glowsticks and foil blankets to passengers stranded in snow

Glowsticks to be provided for delayed train passengers

Commuters are to be given glowsticks and foil blankets on trains in case there is any repeat of last year's winter travel misery.

Heavy snowfalls left many passengers stranded on freezing trains without power last year, and so rail operator Southeastern is planning on handing out the glowsticks and foil blankets to passengers to prepare for the same thing happening again.

However, it seems passenger groups would rather the operator spent its budget on improving the services rather than glowsticks.

Dr Roger Johnson, chairman of the Sevenoaks Rail Travellers' Association, said the decision is a clear sign that the operator is resigned to more rail misery this winter.

He said: 'I see no evidence that all the underlying problems that bedevilled us last winter won't happen again.'

However, Dr Johnson did add: 'I believe Southeastern has done a great deal, much of it behind the scenes, to improve performance of its trains in the winter.'

As well as the glowsticks and blankets Southeastern has purchased three new 4x4 vehicles to respond to engineering emergencies, and has also added 20 passenger trains with de-icing tanks.

Recently passengers in Liverpool were stranded on powerless trains for nearly two hours after a contractor cut through a power cable, causing a complete signal failure on the Merseyrail network
