Injuries After Blast At Crewe Train Station

A man and a woman have been injured in a series of explosions at Crewe railway station.

Manhole covers were blown off in the blasts, on Nantwich Road. The two injured people have been taken to hospital suffering from burns.

A faulty underground electrical cable is believed to have caused the explosions

Cheshire Police say trains have been suspended and surrounding roads cordoned off, but insist the situation is under control.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "There has been a power failure in the area which has resulted in the British Transport Police and Network Rail closing the railway station.

"The electrical authority are carrying out an investigation."

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "There was an explosion in the roadway near the train station.

"The cause is not yet established but it is believed it may have been a combination of gas and electric underground cables.

"Emergency services are there making it safe."
