Birmingham International railway station evacuated

Birmingham International railway station was evacuated on Monday after a train triggered a fire alarm.

The station was cleared as a precaution after fumes from a passing train set off fire alarm at around 10.20am.

It remained closed for half an hour while fire crews carried out their investigation.

A spokesman for Virgin Trains said: “It is believed the root cause was due to fumes from a diesel train, which was not a Virgin Train, which was detected downstairs in the station and set the alarms off.

“Emergency services also attended the scene. There was no major disruption, however, trains did not stop at the station while it was closed.”
