Published on Wed Feb 23 15:50:30 GMT 2011

A SERVICE is to be held to mark the tenth anniversary of the Great Heck train crash on Monday.

Held at St Paul’s in Hensall, it will be attended by employees, families, the emergency services, local government representatives and other officials who were involved, together with representatives from the rail industry. The service will include the lighting of ten candles to remember each of those who lost their lives in the accident.

On February 28, 2001, a GNER train was derailed by a Land Rover which had crashed onto the track at Great Heck, before colliding with a Freightliner train travelling in the opposite direction. Three members of the GNER train crew, six passengers and the driver of the freight train died in the incident. A further 82 passengers suffered serious injuries.
