ORR rules no fourth Brighton Express service for December

Modern Railways reports that The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has taken the decision not to allow Southern to introduce a fourth off peak and Saturday train each hour between Brighton and Victoria from the timetable change on 12 December.

Southern’s proposal to provide an extra hourly service was submitted to, and approved by Network Rail and the industry’s timetabling committee. However, following formal objections by First Capital Connect to these approvals, including concerns about performance, the ORR ruled that the service should not run.

In a statement, Southern said: ‘Such a last-minute change is very frustrating particularly as practical trials showed that this service did not have a significant adverse effect on performance. However, we have no choice other than to remove this train from the timetable. We will reprint the relevant pocket timetables and update all relevant rail industry systems as soon as possible.’

The services which will not run are:

Mon-Fri:

? 0851 hourly to 1551 Victoria to Brighton calling at East Croydon, Gatwick Airport and Burgess Hill
? 0928 hourly to 1528 Brighton to Victoria calling at Burgess Hill, Gatwick Airport, East Croydon and Clapham Junction

Sat:

? 0751 hourly to 1951 Victoria to Brighton calling at East Croydon, Gatwick Airport and Burgess Hill
? 0728 hourly to 1828 Brighton to Victoria calling at Burgess Hill, Gatwick Airport, East Croydon and Clapham Junction

Southern said: ‘We are now turning our attention to the May 2011 timetable change to consider how we can move forward with similar improvements at that time.’
