Manningtree: Ten hurt in rail replacement bus crash

The East Anglian DailyTimes reports that ten people have been hurt after a bus crashed into a bridge as it approached a railway station this evening.

10 people were injured when a bus crashed into a bridge as it approached a railway station.

The bus, which was a rail replacement service between Ipswich and Colchester, collided with the bridge close to Manningtree Railway Station just after 6pm last night.

Police said there were 41 people on the 52-seater bus when the crash happened.

A total of 10 were taken to hospital with minor facial injuries, thought to have been caused by flying glass.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said: “All those injured were taken to Colchester Hospital accident and emergency department with minor injuries.”

Firefighters were also called to help free one person from the stricken vehicle. They were not injured but were unable to get off the bus because of its position.

Peter Meades, spokesman for train operator National Express East Anglia, confirmed the bus had been ferrying passengers from Ipswich to Colchester while engineering work was carried out on the rail line.

He said “The coach struck the side of the bridge. Police attended and an investigation is ongoing.

“My understanding is those people who have received minor injuries are undergoing precautionary checks.

“We have got staff providing them with care and support, and ensuring when they are released we can then arrange transport to get them to their destination as soon as possible.”

He said it was not clear whether everyone had been released from hospital. The road was fully reopened shortly after 8pm.

Mr Meades also stressed it had no impact on the rail line itself. There had been scheduled engineering work on the line between Colchester and Stowmarket throughout the day, and the rail replacement service had been operating from Ipswich.

It is not yet clear exactly how the accident happened, but Mr Meades said it was being treated as a road traffic accident and there would now be an investigation.
