Stagecoach tram operations honoured at 2010 Light Rail Awards

Stagecoach Group’s tram operations in Sheffield and Manchester have picked up a host of commendations at this year’s Light Rail Awards.

Stagecoach Supertram in Sheffield scooped the award for Innovation of the Year for the development of its novel switch wear gauge which monitors the level of wear and tear occurring on switches and crossings on the tram track. The introduction of this new intelligent system allows Stagecoach Supertram to ensure efficient maintenance of these important safety components, allowing them to be replaced in a timely manner.

In addition, the team at Stagecoach Supertram were highly commended for Project of the Year for their work on the “Underfloor Project” which involved a complete refresh of the running gear underneath each tram - the part most people never see. The underfloor refresh will allow Supertram to maintain the trams reliably for many years to come and follows an interior and exterior refresh programme which was previously completed on the entire fleet.

Stagecoach Metrolink also received a highly commended award for the introduction of its new portable ticket machines. The introduction of the Pocket Cross machine signals a major innovation in light rail and is providing a significantly improved and faster method for Travel Safe Officers to check passengers tickets.

Tim Shoveller, Managing Director for Stagecoach Group’s Light Rail operation, said: “We’re delighted with these award wins, which reflect the high quality of our tram operations in Sheffield and Manchester.

“We have a proven track record of delivering some exciting and innovative new ideas and we’re committed to building on the success of these awards to further improve our services and encourage even more people to travel by tram.”

Glenn Stocks, General Manager for Stagecoach Supertram, added: “Our philosophy is to challenge the norm and embrace both new technology and systems to help us maintain a high quality tramway network, whilst continuing to deliver a cost effective service to our customers.

“I’m extremely proud of the team for beating off some strong competition to win the Innovation award this year, and I would like to congratulate all the staff involved.”

Now in their fourth year, the awards recognise excellence in light rail operators and suppliers. The awards were held at a ceremony in London on 6 October.
