Crane smashed off lorry in bridge crash

A CRANE was ripped off the back of a lorry yesterday when it hit a railway bridge – then a car driving behind the lorry hit the machinery.

Emergency crews, including police and Vosa highways agency officers, were sent to the A494 at Deeside to clear the carriageway.

The accident happened shortly before 1.40pm yesterday. Long tailbacks formed as one lane was sealed off westbound to sort the mess out.

It is understood the lorry had been loading up at a local depot but the crane arm was not lowered when it drove out onto the main carriageway

The crane hit a main railway bridge sending it crashing off the back of the lorry and into the path of a Land Rover Discovery. The vehicle then collided with the wrecked machinery.

Hydraulic oil had also spilled.

A North Wales Ambulance spokeswoman said: “We treated a female at the scene for seatbelt injuries. But nobody was taken to hospital.”

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called to make the vehicle safe and help clear the road.”
