TV Preview: One Under – C4, 7.30pm'ONE under' is the term drivers use for a person under their train. This documentary explores the traumatic nature of suicide on the London Underground, pictured, and the long-term effects on those left behind. For many commuters their experience of a 'one under' is minimal and from a distance. However, for those with direct contact with such an horrific occurrence, it can have a huge and lasting impact on their lives. Here drivers give firsthand accounts of their experiences with suicide, from the initial shock to the permanent mental scars these tragic events leave. As one driver says: "You can't swerve to avoid someone when you're driving a tube train. There's nothing you can do except hope you're alert and you've got time to apply the brakes and stop." Tube drivers can now contact a trauma support group set up by peers, which includes continuing support from a counsellor, funded by London Underground. One Under also sees family liaison and British Transport police officers describe how they tell a loved-one of the tragedy. Debbie Wickens, for example, was married to John for 11 years when she received a text message from him – that morning John took his own life. Debbie reveals her painful journey towards recovery, showing how she makes sense of the events leading up to and after her husband's death. |
