Crossrail sets out plans for civil engineering recruitment drive

Plans have been unveiled for a civil engineering recruitment drive during construction work on the new high-speed Crossrail network.
Its Skills and Employment Strategy details how the building of the rail network, which will serve London and the surrounding south-east, including collaborating with Jobcentre Plus to provide civil engineering jobs for local residents.
The strategy also features plans for a new Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy, as well as for a 'Young Crossrail' education project intended to inspire young people to consider future jobs in construction and civil engineering.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson commented: "We want Londoners to benefit from this project in every way and that means giving them the chance to learn the skills and benefit from the jobs created by the scheme.
"The skills strategy and various training and apprenticeship schemes will help us give young inhabitants of this great city the chance to build and benefit from Crossrail as a lasting legacy."
It is expected that around 14,000 people will be employed in construction work on Crossrail during its height between 2013 and 2015, while the project will also provide at least 400 apprenticeship opportunities.
